The HHGttG says space is really, really big. So, it turns out, is Arizona.
I'm in Arizona! Long plane trip, long car ride, and then suddenly we're surrounded by landscape unlike anything I have ever seen before. Mesas, buttes, cacti and spiny pointy plants and landscapes that just go on forever, shaded in tan and brown and red and gold and the startling blue of Lake Powell. Sheer cliffs, and the amazing swoops of stone above our heads in a slot canyon, and the Colorado River gorge; grit blowing in our teeth and our hair; it's spectacular.

Unfortunately we have a nail in a tire and are stuck here in Page an extra day, instead of going on to the Grand Canyon this morning. (And if we can't get a new tire on Monday, things could get kind of unhappy -- I really don't want to drive a hundred miles on the doughnut, but Geoff has a talk to give on Tuesday!) But we're making the best of it; everyone assures us that the local tire warehouse will have a tire to fit, and we'll still have one day at the Canyon in that case.

Meanwhile we're off for a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam; we couldn't do it yesterday, because it was so windy they'd canceled the tours. Later!

    Argh
I am sooooo tired. I got about four hours of sleep last night. Am home w/mom this weekend. Have been puttering with jewelry. But that's not the point of this post.

In my exhaustion, I have developed a plot bunny (beginning already plotted) for an alternate-Earth Steampunkish fantasy SGA novel.

    No, seriously.

[snip of 850 words of plot outline]

I'm irritated because this all started over that damn Fannish Bulwer-Lytton thing, so it's starting off to be McShep with Ronon/Rodney and Teyla/Ronon when what I really wanted was Ronon/Sheppard and Teyla/Rodney. I may yet work this out, though, so there's happy endings all 'round.

God, I'm tired. That much should be clear by now....

    Making space
Okay, so I got a later start than planned, and for the record, I totally blame [info]lauramcewan and her long, yummy Boys in Blue story The Ages of a Day, otherwise I would have started on time. Yep, all Laura's fault.

But. I've finished my annual clean-out-the-walk-in-closet-and-donate-to-Good-Will. Eeeee!! It's amazing how items I simply can't live without one year I'm perfectly happy to give away the next in order to have more space. My sole guilty pleasure stands, though: I still own about 400 fanzines that I simply cannot give away. I can't. Not even the het smut Luke/Leia zine printed in the early 80's. Not even the Hardcastle/McCormick zine I bought when I was but a naive 19-year-old Gen fan at my first MediaWest, who spotted the zine and thought they *seemed* to be sitting a bit close on the cover...  I can still remember when and where I bought most of them, I think.

I sorted out a big batch of my favorite zines and filled the bottom shelf of one of the new bookshelves. Zines that I can get to easily before bed - a breakthrough!

Now to tackle the daunting pile of stuff to give away that's completely covering my bed. I'm not sure how I'm even getting this stuff to Good Will.

As a reward for my hard work, I'm going to take my 30% off coupon to Borders tomorrow and pick up Robert Vaughn's new auto, A Fortunate Life. I was there yesterday to buy it but they hadn't unwrapped the shipment yet.

    Lots of Stuff
First, computer issues popping up again. *sighs* I love this laptop, I really do. But I'm getting the same 'chkdsk' error that I was getting several months ago. That whole nightmare culminated with Lenovo sending me a new hard drive. That was in January. So it's been maybe nine months of nice, stable, beautifully running computer. I really don't want to go through that again.

I'm not working on the floor at the moment. I meant to do part of it today, but it's such an ass-kicker that I just couln't get myself to do it.

Fun stuff - I have all these projects to grade! I'm excited about it, because I've never had students that were actually capable of doing something like this.

    Luck vs Effort
Whenever anyone says that [X,Y,Z] in your life is due to luck - or that [X,Y,Z] is not in their life because of luck, think on this.

Very things in life are the result of pure 'luck' (unless we're talking about surviving a shark attack or an avalanche in which case, boy are you unlucky to have been caught in one in the first place. statistically speaking)

Or consider this:  "......And that’s the key to the paradox of effort: While luck may be more appealing than effort, you don’t get to choose luck. Effort, on the other hand, is totally available, all the time." Seth Godin

Or this: "If you can devote two hours a day to improving yourself and doing something to change your situation, your life will improve. Period."

I was going to post a poll asking whether I should make brownies or not, but I decided to go for it anyways. Mmm . . . *pours tall glass of milk to go with*

Did I mention how much I love my new stove? Remember how much my old one leaked heat into the kitchen? *to lazy to find tags* The new one has a hugely thick door, so the heat stays in the oven where it belongs.

Sean's wife keeps walking out after rows

STORMY: Tempers have flared between Georgina and new hubby Sean Bean [above]

KISS: On their wedding day [left]

    By Guy Basnett, 31/08/2008

THE new wife of TV hardman Sean Bean has repeatedly left him just SIX MONTHS into their marriage, the News of the World can reveal.

Friends say fiery Georgina Sutcliffe, 29, has had a string of blazing rows with the Sharpe star.

They ended with her walking out of their £2 million London home and staying with her mum for a few days while they patch things up.

A pal said: "I've lost count of the number of times they scream at each other, normally when they have had a drink. It's become a weekly event.

    Fortune

"It usually starts late at night. All hell breaks loose with them shouting and screaming. The neighbours must be sick of it by now."

Actress Georgina, who appeared in TV drama The New Adventures of Robin Hood, and 49-year-old Sean married in February—a month after calling off their first wedding at 24 hours' notice for "personal reasons".

We can also reveal that she will get just £500,000 of Sean's £10 million fortune if they ever split for good after he CHANGED a pre-nuptial agreement when their first wedding was cancelled.

Our source said: "It's a bit of a raw deal for Georgina. The amount she'll receive was negotiated down to £500,000."

    Love

The couple have become known for their turbulent relationship. Six weeks ago four-times wed Sean was arrested on suspicion of attacking his new wife although police took no further action.

Last year she launched a four- letter tirade at him after he got pally with a female guest at a polo match.

And in 2006 there were reports of a drink-fuelled fight at an LA hotel.

The pal went on: "They love each other dearly, but that passion also makes their relationship very stormy.

"We all thought Sean's recent arrest would be the final nail in the coffin for the marriage. But no matter how many times Georgina leaves, she always returns. All their friends hope things settle down."

Hollywood star in tribute to Sudders

Hollywood star in tribute to Sudders

    • Oct 9 2008 by Katie Campling, Huddersfield Daily Examiner

HOLLYWOOD star Sean Bean will attend the memorial service being held for campaigning journalist Adrian Sudbury next week.

The Sheffield-born actor, 49, will give a reading at the service at Sheffield Cathedral on October 16.

The service, starting at 2 pm, will celebrate the life of Adrian, who died of leukaemia in August, aged just 27.

Examiner reporter Adrian, who lived in Sheffield, had spent his last months campaigning to raise awareness about bone marrow donation – particularly among 17 and 18-year-olds.

The achievements of his Sign Up For Sudders campaign will be highlighted at the service.

Sheffield United fan Sean – known for his roles in Sharpe and Lord Of The Rings – will read an extract from a poem entitled On Death, by Indian poet Khalil Gibran. Sean had met Adrian in July 2007, when they both promoted a cancer campaign at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

Sean had met Adrian in July 2007, when they both promoted a cancer campaign at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

The Sheffield Leukaemia Blood Disorders Appeal aimed to raise £150,000 for equipment on the wards of the hospital, where Adrian underwent some of his treatment.

Adrian and Sean planted a tree together in the hospital grounds as a lasting reminder of the appeal.

Sean's father Brian Bean, from Handsworth, had been receiving treatment for lymphoma – a form of cancer that affects the immune system.

Adrian's parents, Keith and Kay, said they were pleased that Sean would be at the service.

They hope that his presence will bring a high profile to the event and help to spread Adrian's message about bone marrow donation further.

Keith said: "We are very pleased. He has supported leukaemia appeals in the past and it is very nice that he's putting something back in this way. We are happy that he's going to be at the service and I am sure he will be a big hit."

--- for those interested - the poem Sean is to read from:

    On Death

Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."

    And he said:

You would know the secret of death.

But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?

The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

    In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;

And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.

Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?

Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

    - Khalil Gibran
